SA Prüm – A History of Winegrowing and Tradition
Share
Prüm – a name synonymous with wine growing in the heart of the Moselle region, dating back to the Middle Ages. The first documents mentioning the Prüm family date back to 1156 and show that the family already owned vineyards at that time. This centuries-old heritage has been expanded and refined over the generations to become the prestigious winery we know today.
Sebastian Alois Prüm (1794-1871), the founder and namesake of the current winery, was an important figure in this history. He had seven sons, of whom only Mathias (1835-1890) married and continued his family line. With his 17 hectares of vineyard, Mathias Prüm owned the largest bourgeois winery on the Mosel in the mid-19th century. He had seven children, and his third son, whom he named after his father, Sebastian Alois Prüm (1877-1959), laid the foundation for the winery SA Prüm in 1911.
The tradition was continued by Raimund Prüm (1923-1971), the second oldest child of the founder. He managed the winery together with the heirs until 1970, after which he continued the winery alone from 1971. Raimund, also called the “red Prüm” because of his distinctive approach, built SA Prüm into one of the best wineries in Germany with international recognition.
Since 1 July 2017, SA Prüm has been headed by Saskia Andrea Prüm, Raimund’s daughter, making her the first female owner of the winery. With her initials at the helm of the company, she continues the tradition and brings new energy to this iconic winery. Under her leadership, SA Prüm’s fine wines, such as the exclusive Eiswein and Beerenauslese, are internationally acclaimed for their finesse and expression of the Mosel region.
