The EU has had a law in place since 2005 requiring that all food and beverage labels must state the substances to which people may be allergic. Wine is originally a natural beverage to which not much needs to be added. In fact, it is fermented grape juice. What wine does always contain is sulphite. Some people, such as asthmatics, may be sensitive to it.
What can you suffer from?
Sulphites cause headaches in some people. Wine is often seen as the culprit. Sometimes it is good to put this into perspective. After all, all kinds of other daily foods contain much more sulphites than wine. A good example is fruit juice. This juice contains much more sulphites than wine.
Does wine always contain sulphites?
No, all wine that you buy in the supermarket or liquor store contains sulphites. After all, sulphites are naturally released during fermentation. So they are inherently linked to the process of winemaking itself. So organic wine also contains sulphites. So that is not the distinguishing factor of organic wine.
What is the function of sulfite?
The winemaker generally adds sulphite during the making of the wine. Sulphite is a collective name for all substances with sulphur. First of all, the sulphite protects the wine as much as possible against oxidation. This keeps the wine nice and fresh and fruity. In addition, it ensures that moulds and bacteria do not get a chance so quickly. The wine therefore remains nice and pure.
